The traditional viniculture method of Japan called "Tanashiki saibai" was invented by a doctor "Tokuhon Kai"(1513~1630) here in Katsunuma in Edo period(), and it is still the most familiar viniculture method in Japan.

"Tanashiki-saibai" is suitable method for highly vital "Koshu grape" tree and for highly humid Japanese weather.

In "Tanashiki-saibai", grapes are cultivated on the shelf-like structure. This shelf-like structure is constructed by placing net between props of about 180cm in height which are put up in all sides. Grape tree extend its branches along the net.

In fence cultivation (viniculture method of the western countries) , many grape trees are planted closew each other, and grape trees grow up higher toward the sky. On the other hand, in "Tanashiki-saibai" , only 1~3 grape trees are planted sparsly in one area, and nutrients of the soil are concentrated on those few trees.
